Then Check Rated Operating Capacity — This Is Where Buyers Get Burned
Width gets the attention. Capacity is what overloads machines. Here is the blunt math most buyers never do:
Wet dirt or clay runs roughly 2,500–3,000 lbs per cubic yard. Gravel is similar. A larger bucket might hold 0.75–1 cubic yard heaped. Now add the weight of the bucket itself — a heavy-duty general purpose skid steer bucket in the 78–84 inch range can weigh 700–1,000 lbs empty.
If your machine has a 2,000 lb rated operating capacity, a heaped 84-inch bucket of wet clay puts you well past it. The result: light rear end, tipping forward on slopes, weak breakout force, and loader arms and pins wearing out early. You didn't buy a more productive bucket. You bought a slower, more dangerous one.
The working rule: bucket weight plus a full load of your heaviest common material should stay inside your machine's rated operating capacity. For heavy material, that usually means the smaller of the two bucket sizes that fit your machine width.

1. Buying the widest bucket that fits
The most common mistake, period. Wider looks more productive on paper. In dense material it means partial loads, tipping, slow cycles, and stressed loader arms. The best skid steer bucket size is the one your machine can fill, lift, and dump at full working speed — repeatedly, all day.
2. Ignoring the bucket's own weight
